Students looking for money to pay for college in fall 2008 have until April 1 to apply for a Hinds Community College Development Foundation scholarship.

The Hinds Community College Development Foundation manages more than 250 scholarship funds. The foundation will award approximately 400 student scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,660 for the 2008-09 school year.

Requirements
For a Development Foundation scholarship, a student needs three letters of reference, a high school or college transcript, ACT scores, a list of achievements and a letter explaining why he or she should receive a Development Foundation Scholarship. Unlike an ACT scholarship, most Development Foundation scholarships do not require a minimum ACT score.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a student's desire for achievement, involvement in extracurricular activities, financial need, grades, test scores and letters of recommendation.

Official Rules for Kohl's Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program

Eligibility:
No purchase necessary. Nominees must be legal U.S. residents of a state in which a Kohl’s store is located. Nominees must be between the ages of 6 and 18 and not yet a high school graduate as of March 15, 2008. Each nominee must be nominated by someone age 21 years or older. Employees of Kohl’s Department Stores , Inc. (“Kohl’s”) and Scholarship America or either companies’ respective parents, subsidiaries and affiliates and such employees’ immediate family members and members of the same household are ineligible for nomination. Kohl’s associates may nominate non-related children. Members of Scholarship America selection committees may not nominate a child.

Nominees may only be nominated once and may not have been a prior Kohl’s Kids Who Care® regional or national scholarship recipient. Multiple nominations for one nominee will not be accepted, even if submitted by different nominators. Awards are for individuals, so please nominate only one person per entry.

Nominations:
Nomination forms may only be completed and submitted at www.kohlskidswhocare.com. No paper nomination forms will be accepted. Forms must be submitted and signed electronically by a nominator who is 21 years or older no later than 11:59 p.m. CDT, March 15, 2008. All sections of the nomination form must be completed. Nominees who become winners and their parent/guardian must sign a Publicity Release/Scholarship Acceptance Form prior to receipt of any scholarship.

Nominations should describe how the nominee has contributed to the community in a meaningful way by performing volunteer services that helped non-family members. The volunteer activity must have occurred within the last 12 months. Financial need or academic performance will not be considered in the review and selection of winners.

Kohl’s and Scholarship America shall not be responsible for misdirected, incomplete or late nomination forms. All nominations become property of Kohl’s and Scholarship America and will not be returned or acknowledged. Additional information about a nominee and/or documentation may be requested by Kohl’s or Scholarship America. To remain eligible, nominees must provide all reasonably requested documentation and information upon

Awards:
Nomination forms will be separated into two age groups: ages 6-12 and ages 13-18. One nominee from each age group will be selected as a store-level winner for each Kohl’s Store and will receive a $50.00 Kohl’s Gift Card. One hundred ninety $1,000 regional scholarships will be awarded, 95 to each age group. Ten $5,000 national scholarships will be awarded, five to each age group. In addition, Kohl’s will contribute a $1,000 to a non-profit organization on behalf of each national winner.

Notification:
Winners will be notified in June 2008.

Recipients Claiming Scholarships:
All recipients will be required to sign and return a Publicity Release/Scholarship Acceptance Form as a condition of receiving a gift card and/or scholarship. Scholarship redemption is subject to recipient submitting verification of enrollment in an undergraduate program at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school (a “Qualifying Institution”). In the event a recipient does not graduate from high school or does not enroll in a Qualifying Institution within two years after high school graduation, the scholarship will be forfeited.

Scholarship Restrictions:

Scholarship awards must be used for educational expenses at a Qualifying Institution. These expenses may include tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, transportation and other miscellaneous education related expenses. Scholarships will be paid in one installment in August and will be mailed to each recipient’s home address payable to the school for the student.

Awards are one time only and are not renewable. No substitutions or transfers are permitted. Limit one award per household per year.

Info Scholarship - Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, The Netherlands

Annually, the Jan van Eyck organises a receptive recruitment campaign. Candidates are requested to submit proposals for research and/or production and to indicate the length of the desired research period (minimum 1 month, maximum 24 months). Candidates can apply for a one or two year period starting at the academic year on 1 January each year.

The selection is carried out departmentally (Fine Art, Design, Theory). In other words, candidate researchers are asked to relate to a particular discipline – this does not necessarily mean the submitted proposal has to fit within the generally valid definition of the chosen discipline: it is all to do with the independently formulated relationship to the discipline in question. Through this receptive recruitment the Jan van Eyck can accommodate unique individual research proposals which cannot be realised elsewhere.

Apart from the receptive recruitment of (advising) researchers the Jan van Eyck also applies a pro-active approach to recruitment. Like the receptive recruitment – the formulation of the research proposal is the task of the candidate researcher – the pro-active recruitment is not carried out according to a particular format. A recruitment and research trajectory is designed per subject and/or per involved party – internal and/or external (advising) researchers; partners in The Netherlands and abroad. A research project can be proposed by a partner institute, after which the recruitment of (advising) researchers is started. Alternatively, a research project may be initiated by an advising researcher or it can be realised together with one or more researchers, whether or not especially recruited to this end. A research project can also be defined by an ad hoc committee, making a pronouncement on what is seen to be an urgent theme within a particular discipline at a given moment in time. In all cases, selection takes place after candidate researchers have applied and have been interviewed by the selection committee. The length of the research period is dependent on the objectives of the research project.

Researchers’ contract

The relationship between the researcher and the Jan van Eyck is arranged in a contract. The contract covers the following topics: registration (duration research period, et cetera), information on policy (documentation, accommodation, studio, et cetera) and the concrete results of the research (distribution, copyrights, sharing revenues, et cetera). Candidates who are accepted as researchers can only start their research period once the contract is signed.

Stipend

Researchers who fully commit to the institute receive an annual stipend of € 8,840, paid in 13 instalments of € 680. Researchers who cannot fully comply to this condition receive only half of the annual stipend (€ 4,420).

If a researcher obtains a grant from third parties, such as Unesco, through the mediation of the Jan van Eyck, a deduction will be applied to the stipend of the institute. If a researcher succeeds in finding additional financial means independently, that is to say, without mediation of the institute, these means will not be deducted from the Jan van Eyck stipend.

The institute estimates living expenses, including accommodation, at € 618 a month – based on the Dutch standard for the minimal standard of living.

Production budget

Researchers who need financial support for realising productions can submit proposals to the departments. The departments have full autonomy. The departments themselves determine the procedures for submitting proposals, for the way decisions are made and how the budget is spent.

Editorial Board

To request financing for large productions (exceeding € 3,500), researchers can submit proposals to the Editorial Board, the multi-disciplinary platform for content discussions in de Jan van Eyck, which has a production budget. The institute encourages collaboration with partner institutes and assists in obtaining (project) subsidies and sponsoring in order to increase the financial means for productions.

Location

The Jan van Eyck is based in Maastricht, a student city in the south of the Netherlands, situated near Belgium and Germany. Cities like Brussels, Antwerp, Aachen and Cologne, but also Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Paris can be reached by train within three hours.

Housing

Rooms and flats are in short supply in and around Maastricht. After acceptance, researchers receive information on how to search for accommodation. The researchers' secretary assists in this matter. It is important to start looking as soon as possible after admission. The average rent for a room in Maastricht is € 300 per month.

Residence permit (MVV)

Researchers who do not have Dutch nationality require a permit to reside in the Netherlands.

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, United Kingdom

Citizens from these countries are obliged to comply with the following requirements: a. a valid passport or other valid travelling document; b. sufficient financial means; c. proof of health insurance. They do not have to register with the Aliens Police and do not require a residence permit. Even though a residence permit is not required, it might be useful to request ‘proof of lawful residence’ from the IND. Other institutions, such as the tax authorities or banks (for instance, on opening a bank account), may request to see this proof.

New Zealand, South Korea, United States

Reseachers from these countries only need to apply for their visas after having arrived in the Netherlands.

Other Countries

Researchers from countries not listed above must obtain a residence permit before coming to the Netherlands. After the selection committee has advised positively about the dossier of a candidate researcher, the Jan van Eyck applies for an Authorisation Temporary Residence (MVV) to the IND (the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service). If this first application is successful, the IND will request for legal dues to be paid. Once the IND has received this payment, both the academy and the Dutch embassy in the country of origin of the researcher will be informed by the IND that an MVV will be granted. The researcher must personally go to the Dutch embassy in his/her country of origin to receive an MVV statement in their passport. On arrival at the academy, the academy must inform the Aliens Police within three working days of this arrival. Then, the academy and/or researcher will begin proceedings with regard to a residence permit being granted. The regional IND centre in ‘s-Hertogenbosch will deal with the application. If the application meets the requirements, legal dues must be paid once again. It is possible to pay by using the enclosed payment slip; the procedure will then take about six to eight weeks. This period can be shortened considerably by paying the amount due in person, at the IND centre in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. In that case, the residence permit will be issued immediately. Even with this combined approach of academy and researcher acting together, the procedure takes a minimum of three months.

Available to: all interested The Harriman Institute of Columbia University announces two postdoctoral fellowships for the academic year 2008-9 for the study of Russian/Soviet influence in the Mediterranean Area.

The Harriman Institute proposes to award two postdoctoral fellowships for a new research project on Russian/Soviet Influence in the Mediterranean Area. Winning candidates will be contributing to a three-year research project dedicated to “Great Power(s) in the Mediterranean” coordinated by the Institute for the Study of Europe. The goal is to reconsider the role of the Mediterranean in modern European identity, with the fellows highlighting Russian and Soviet imperial influence in the region. By speaking of Great Power in the singular, the project wants to highlight the soft power dimensions of competing military and political hegemonies, including claims on resources, shifting global trade networks, religious proselytism and models of development. The time framework is roughly 18th century to the present, including the Cold War era. The project welcomes expertise on the relations with Russia/Soviet influence of other imperial forces in the area (from the Ottoman and Western European Powers to the Americans) as well as of indigenous and post-colonial movements and states. In addition to conducting their own research, the fellows will help run workshops and other initiatives associated with the project.

Postdoctoral awards are normally for one academic year, although in some cases the support can be for one semester. They require that the recipient be in residence at Columbia. All fellows have access to the Institute's reading room, archives, lectures, and discussions as well as the resources within the Columbia library system. Although the Institute’s space is limited, it does accommodate postdoctoral fellows with desk areas.

Eligibility is restricted to those applicants who have received the Ph.D. within the three years prior to the fellowship period for which they are applying. Candidates cannot hold a faculty position and must have successfully defended and deposited their dissertations prior to the commencement of the fellowship.

Postdoctoral Fellows
The Postdoctoral Fellows Program enables junior scholars who have recently received the Ph.D. to spend a specified term in residence at the Institute (usually a semester or an academic year) without any obligations other than the revision of their dissertation for publication in book form. Nevertheless, fellows are encouraged to share their work by giving a public presentation, and to participate in lectures and other events. Fellows may use the Harriman Resource Center and the Columbia Libraries. Although space is limited, the Institute tries to provide offices or at least desk space for all postdoctoral fellows.

The primary criterion for such fellowships is excellence. Evidence of the dissertation’s potential to make a significant contribution to Russian, Soviet or post-Soviet studies weighs most in the Fellowship Committee's selection of fellows. Postdoctoral fellows must have received the Ph.D. within the three years prior to the fellowship period for which they are applying. Candidates cannot hold a faculty position and must have successfully defended their dissertations by June 1 and deposit them before the start of the academic year in early September in order to receive their fellowships. There is no set number of fellowships.

Visiting Scholars
In recognition of their contributions to Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet studies, the Harriman Institute is host to Visiting Scholars who are faculty members from other universities, independent researchers (at the Ph.D. level or its equivalent), and other professionals working in the field. Visiting Scholar is a courtesy title which does not signify a formal association with the University. Individuals named to this title may not claim a University affiliation for the purpose of applying for grants and contracts and should not represent themselves in their publications and correspondence as having a University affiliation. Visiting Scholar status carries no stipend or fellowship.

The title of Visiting Scholar is generally reserved for persons in one of five categories: (1) Members of academic institutions (including graduate students). If the person is from the New York metropolitan area, he or she must be on leave from their home institution; (2) officials and former officials of government or non-government organizations, such as the United Nations, and their affiliates; (3) members of research laboratories or institutions; (4) practicing professionals and creative artists; (5) such other persons who will contribute to the intellectual activity of the University, as approved by the Office of the Associate Provost on the request of the school or department. Individuals may be named Visiting Scholars for up to one year. Renewals for a second year are granted only in exceptional cases.

Upon selection by the Institute Affiliations Committee and approval by the Provost, Visiting Scholars are entitled to certain limited rights and privileges. Scholars are issued a card entitling them to free reading privileges in Columbia's libraries. The University charges a monthly fee of $30.00 for borrowing privileges. Visiting Scholars are issued a Columbia e-mail account at no charge. Scholars may also use other facilities at the University such as the Computer Center, the Audio/Visual Aids Center, and the gymnasium—all subject to the individual regulations of the department or center involved.

Visiting Scholars have access to the Harriman Institute Resource Center and are welcome to participate fully in the intellectual life of the Institute. Visiting Scholars are not entitled to office space, photocopying, postage or telephone privileges; the Institute will attempt to provide some working space if requested and available. Occasionally, in special circumstances, photocopying, mailing and telephone privileges can be extended to Visiting Scholars at their expense. The Institute cannot provide any secretarial or clerical help to Visiting Scholars. Visiting Scholars are ineligible for the University's medical insurance or pension plans or for University housing.

Candidates for the Visiting Scholars Program should submit their request in writing to the Harriman Institute Affiliations Committee and include the following information:

The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences is host to most of the engineering activities at Swinburne as well as key programs in aviation and photonics. The Coastal Engineering and Physical Oceanography group of the Faculty specialises in research of deep-water and finite-depth wave dynamics, spectral modelling of wind-generated waves, wave breaking and dissipation, air-sea interaction, wave-bottom interaction and turbulence.
Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) is seeking a suitably qualified student to undertake post-graduate study to develop an altimeter database for ocean waves and apply it to investigation of extreme wave events.

Abstract
Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have made measurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of 7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined database represents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global wave conditions. This project involves developing a combined database from these separate missions and then applying this to the determination of extreme wave conditions at any location on the global oceans. The resulting database has the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave design is undertaken.

General Position Description:
The Technical Programs Manager is an interdisciplinary specialist who works as part of a team to carry out the goals of the Estuary Partnership and implement the Management Plan and biennial workplans. Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Duties. Implements projects and program activities related to habitat restoration ecosystem monitoring, and pollution reduction. Oversees technical support for the organization including GIS and related programs. Works with Executive Director to complete funding proposals.

Manages key projects including developing plans, objectives, procedures, scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and issuing work assignments. Reviews work in progress and completed work to ensure contractor and consultant compliance with State and Federal laws, regulations, policy, and procedures. Provides data and work elements to Technical Projects Coordinator as required to ensure contractors are meeting contract standards.

Organization Duties.

Participate in meetings to discuss organization goals and objectives; assist other staff members with projects to meet organizational goals; identifies resources and administrative needs required to complete projects. Represents the Estuary Partnership, the Executive Director and the Director of Stewardship and Technical Programs at various meetings, conferences, advisory committees, and workshops and in other public settings.

Work Groups and Committees.

Serves as staff to the Estuary Partnership Science Work Group. Responsible for organizing meetings, agendas and meeting materials. Works with Executive Director or the Director of Stewardship Programs, Workgroup and Committee chair(s) or liaisons and partners to develop, coordinate, and complete the work tasks as prescribed in the biennial workplan and implementation strategies.

Minimum Qualifications:
Six years of experience working on science based watershed protection issues. A Bachelor's degree in watershed management, water quality, marine sciences, biology, habitat conservation or related natural resource area. A Master's degree in related field can substitute for up to one year of the required experience. Experience managing staff required.

Opportunity Initiative 2008 - 2009

The US Department of State is pleased to announce the Opportunity Initiative, designed to support the application process to US higher education institutions for students who are highly qualified but are unable to cover the expense of applying. The Initiative provides funds to cover the costs faced by talented but financially disadvantaged international students who are not eligible for or funded by other US Government-sponsored exchange programs. Students must apply to accredited institutions independently (at the graduate or undergraduate level) and are responsible for the entire process.

The Opportunity Initiative may cover expenses including: testing fees, transportation and overnight accommodation and meals at testing sites located far from the student's home, application fees for US institutions, international courier fees to send applications to theUS, costs for translations and certifications of the student's official documents and records, costs relating to applying for appropriate U.S. exchange visitor visas, transportation and overnight accommodation and meals for the purposes of a visa interview in cases where the consulate is located far from a student's home, transportation to the U.S. to the institution where the student will study, and/or a one-time settling-in allowance to help international students cover the initial costs of living in the U.S.

Funding for selected grantees is at the discretion of the US Embassy in Kyiv and may be discontinued at any time if the student does not meet his/her responsibilities (for example, meeting test and application deadlines). The Opportunity Initiative offers no guarantee of acceptance or financial aid awards at US institutions.

Each individual student is eligible for no more that $3,000 total, which may cover allowed expenses, if the need is proven. However, some specific items such as application fee payments; test fee payments; settle-in and travel allowance also have maximum allowable
amounts (contact advisers for further information).

PROCESS and TIMELINE

Application Process

Applicants may complete Self-Nomination forms at any time. They must be sumbmitted electronically and in hard copies to Osvita Educational Advising Center.

In order to prove financial need, an applicant shall submit the Financial Need Form to an advisor. If applicant is financially dependent on his/her parents, he/she should provide information from parents' work places regarding monthly income. If applicant is employed, he/she should provide the same information. All information is confidential, and will be reviewed by the adviser and the Selection Committee at the U.S. Embassy to determine applicant's
financial need and eligibility.

Invoices (if the payment was not made yet) and receipts (when reimbursement is requested) should be attached to the Self-Nomination Form, along with an overall budget request. These documents should be provided to the adviser in both hard copy and electronically.

In order to facilitate handling, applicants will be asked to complete a Disbursement Authorization Form, providing personal and bank information. This shall be submitted to the adviser electronically only. All other forms will be completed as appropriate.

Applicants should keep in mind that they may be asked to provide additional information, and should maintain contact with their adviser. Letters of reference are not required, but may be helpful if available. In addition, (draft) Application Forms for admission to US universities are a good source for information about the applicant, and may help the adviser in the nomination process.

Nomination

The adviser will collect all required materials from applicant, add an endorsement, and forward the packet to U.S. Embassy Kyiv. Complete nominations will be sent weekly by EducationUSA centers to a committee of experts for evaluation on a rolling basis.

The Selection Committee includes staff from the US Embassy's Public Affairs Section. Experts will be selecting according to the following criteria: proven financial need; demonstrated motivation to study in the US; academic achievement; extracurricular activities and achievements; leadership qualities. No priorities are given based on racial, ethnic or geographical criteria, or field of study.

Experts will evaluate each nomination using a standard form. Nominations will be rated based on above criteria, additional information may be requested.

Final selection is made by the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator in Moscow. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv will be notified regarding final selection of candidates on a rolling basis, but the
selection process should not take longer than two weeks.

Letters informing applicants of their status will be provided to educational advisers by the U.S. Embassy. Nominees not selected for funding will receive letters notifying them of their status.

Funds Transfer

Funds are transferred from the U.S. Department of State to the Institute of International Education and then to the Fulbright Office.

Finalists will be required to confirm personal bank details in order to receive the funding directly. The Fulbright Office will transfer funds via EFT to grantees.

Reporting

If applicant is provided financial support, but has not provided anything more than invoices at the moment of grant disbursement, he/she is responsible for obtaining and providing confirmations of payments as allowed by grant conditions. Confirmation may be in the form of bank transfer; receipts; letters of confirmation from US universities; etc. These should be provided to the same adviser/Advising Center from which nomination originated. Student who
receive a grant but do not provide evidence of proper utilization of money will not be considered for further Opportunity Initiative participation.

Be Original. Even seemingly boring essay topics can sound interesting if creatively approached. If writing about a gymnastics competition you trained for, do not start your essay: "I worked long hours for many weeks to train for XXX competition." Consider an opening like, "Every morning I awoke at 5:00 to sweat, tears, and blood as I trained on the uneven bars hoping to bring the state gymnastics trophy to my hometown."
Be Yourself. Scholarship officers want to learn about you and your writing ability. Write about something meaningful and describe your feelings, not necessarily your actions. If you do this, your essay will be unique. Many people travel to foreign countries or win competitions, but your feelings during these events are unique to you. Unless a philosophy or societal problem has interested you intensely for years, stay away from grand themes that you have little personal experience with.
Don't "Thesaurize" your Composition. For some reason, students continue to think big words make good essays. Big words are fine, but only if they are used in the appropriate contexts with complex styles. Think Hemingway.
Use Imagery and Clear, Vivid Prose. If you are not adept with imagery, you can write an excellent essay without it, but it's not easy. The application essay lends itself to imagery since the entire essay requires your experiences as supporting details. Appeal to the five senses of the scholarship officers.
Spend the Most Time on your Introduction. Expect scholarship officers to spend 1-2 minutes reading your essay. You must use your introduction to grab their interest from the beginning. You might even consider completely changing your introduction after writing your body paragraphs.

Don't Summarize in your Introduction. Ask yourself why a reader would want to read your entire essay after reading your introduction. If you summarize, the scholarship officer need not read the rest of your essay.
Create Mystery or Intrigue in your Introduction. It is not necessary or recommended that your first sentence give away the subject matter. Raise questions in the minds of the scholarship officers to force them to read on. Appeal to their emotions to make them relate to your subject matter.

Body Paragraphs Must Relate to Introduction. Your introduction can be original, but cannot be silly. The paragraphs that follow must relate to your introduction.
Use Transition. Applicants continue to ignore transition to their own detriment. You must use transition within paragraphs and especially between paragraphs to preserve the logical flow of your essay. Transition is not limited to phrases like "as a result, in addition, while . . . , since . . . , etc." but includes repeating key words and progressing the idea. Transition provides the intellectual architecture to argument building.
Conclusions are Crucial. The conclusion is your last chance to persuade the reader or impress upon them your qualifications. In the conclusion, avoid summary since the essay is rather short to begin with; the reader should not need to be reminded of what you wrote 300 words before. Also do not use stock phrases like "in conclusion, in summary, to conclude, etc." You should consider the following conclusions:

Expand upon the broader implications of your discussion.
Consider linking your conclusion to your introduction to establish a sense of balance by reiterating introductory phrases.
Redefine a term used previously in your body paragraphs.
End with a famous quote that is relevant to your argument. Do not try to do this, as this approach is overdone. This should come naturally.
Frame your discussion within a larger context or show that your topic has widespread appeal.
Remember, your essay need not be so tidy that you can answer why your little sister died or why people starve in Africa; you are not writing a "sit-com," but should forge some attempt at closure.

Do Something Else. Spend a week or so away from your draft to decide if you still consider your topic and approach worthwhile.
Give your Draft to Others. Ask editors to read with these questions in mind:

What is the essay about?
Have I used active voice verbs wherever possible?
Is my sentence structure varied or do I use all long or all short sentences?
Do you detect any cliches?
Do I use transition appropriately?
Do I use imagery often and does this make the essay clearer and more vivid?
What's the best part of the essay?
What about the essay is memorable?
What's the worst part of the essay?
What parts of the essay need elaboration or are unclear?
What parts of the essay do not support your main argument or are immaterial to your case?
Is every single sentence crucial to the essay? This MUST be the case.
What does the essay reveal about your personality?
Could anyone else have written this essay?
How would you fill in the following blank based on the essay: "I want to accept you to this college because our college needs more ________."

Revise, Revise, Revise. You only are allowed so many words; use them wisely. If H.D. Thoreau couldn't write a good essay without revision, neither will you. Delete anything in the essay that does not relate to your main argument. Do you use transition? Are your introduction and conclusions more than summaries? Did you find every single grammatical error?
Allow for the evolution of your main topic. Do not assume your subject must remain fixed and that you can only tweak sentences.
Editing takes time. Consider reordering your supporting details, delete irrelevant sections, and make clear the broader implications of your experiences. Allow your more important arguments to come to the foreground. Take points that might only be implicit and make them explicit.

Step Two - Selecting an Essay Topic

Having completed step one, you should now have a rough idea of the elements you wish to include in your scholarship essay, including your goals, important life experiences, research experience, diversifying features, spectacular nonacademic accomplishments, financial need, etc. You should also now have an idea of what impression you want to make on the scholarship committee.

You must now consider topics that will allow you to synthesize your important personal characteristics and experiences into a coherent whole. While most scholarship essays allow great latitude in topic selection, you must also be sure to answer the questions that were asked of you. Leaving a lasting impression on someone who reads 50 essays a day will not be easy, but we have compiled some guidelines to help you get started.

Consider the following questions before proceeding:

Have you selected a topic that describes something of personal importance in your life, with which you can use vivid personal experiences as supporting details?
Is your topic a gimmick? That is, do you plan to write your essay in iambic pentameter or make it funny. You should be very, very careful if you are planning to do this. We recommend strongly that you do not do this. Almost always, this is done poorly and is not appreciated by the scholarship committee unless a creative approach is explicitly recommended. Nothing is worse than not laughing or not being amused at something that was written to be funny or amusing.
Will your topic only repeat information listed elsewhere on your application? If so, pick a new topic. Don’t mention GPAs or standardized test scores in your essay if they are mentioned elsewhere.
Can you offer vivid supporting paragraphs to your essay topic? If you cannot easily think of supporting paragraphs with concrete examples, you should probably choose a different essay topic.
Can you fully answer the question asked of you? Can you address and elaborate on all points within the specified word limit? If you plan on writing about something technical, make sure you truly can back up your interest in a topic and are not merely throwing around big scientific words. Unless you convince the reader that you actually have the life experiences to back up your interest in neurobiology, the reader will assume you are trying to impress him/her with shallow tactics. Also, be sure you can write to the scholarship officers and that you are not writing over their heads.
Can you keep the reader's interest from the first word. The entire essay must be interesting, considering scholarship officers will probably only spend a few minutes reading each essay.

Will a scholarship officer remember your topic after a day of reading hundreds of essays? What will the officer remember about your topic? What will the officer remember about you? What will your lasting impression be?

While an essay incorporating this information would probably be your best topic idea, you must finesse the issue by addressing your own personal qualities and how you overcame stigma, dealt with social ostracism, etc. If you are a rich student from Beverly Hills whose father is an engineer and whose mother is a lawyer, but you happen to be a minority, an essay about how you dealt with adversity would be unwise. You must demonstrate vividly your personal qualities, interests, motivations, etc. Address specifically how your diversity will contribute to the realm of campus opinion, the academic environment, and the larger society.
Don't mention weaknesses unless you absolutely need to explain them away. You want to make a positive first impression, and telling a scholarship officer anything about drinking, drugs, partying, etc. undermines your goal. The most important aspect of your scholarship essay is the subject matter. You should expect to devote about 1-2 weeks simply to brainstorming ideas. To begin brainstorming a subject idea consider the following points. From brainstorming, you may find a subject you had not considered at first.

What are your major accomplishments, and why do you consider them accomplishments? Do not limit yourself to accomplishments you have been formally recognized for since the most interesting essays often are based on accomplishments that may have been trite at the time but become crucial when placed in the context of your life. This is especially true if the scholarship committee receives a list of your credentials anyway.
Does any attribute, quality, or skill distinguish you from everyone else? How did you develop this attribute?
Consider your favorite books, movies, works of art, etc. Have these influenced your life in a meaningful way? Why are they your favorites?
What was the most difficult time in your life, and why? How did your perspective on life change as a result of the difficulty?
Have you ever struggled mightily for something and succeeded? What made you successful?
Have you ever struggled mightily for something and failed? How did you respond?
Of everything in the world, what would you most like to be doing right now? Where would you most like to be? Who, of everyone living and dead, would you most like to be with? These questions should help you realize what you love most.
Have you experienced a moment of epiphany, as if your eyes were opened to something you were previously blind to?
What is your strongest, most unwavering personality trait? Do you maintain strong beliefs or adhere to a philosophy? How would your friends characterize you? What would they write about if they were writing your scholarship essay for you?
What have you done outside of the classroom that demonstrates qualities sought after by universities? Of these, which means the most to you?
What are your most important extracurricular or community activities? What made you join these activities? What made you continue to contribute to them?
What are your dreams of the future? When you look back on your life in thirty years, what would it take for you to consider your life successful? What people, things, and accomplishments do you need? How does this particular scholarship fit into your plans for the future?

If these questions cannot cure your writer's block, consider the following exercises:

1. Ask for Help from Parents, Friends, Colleagues, etc.
If you cannot characterize yourself and your personality traits do not automatically leap to mind, ask your friends to write a list of your five most salient personality traits. Ask your friends why they chose the ones they did. If an image of your personality begins to emerge, consider life experiences that could illustrate these particular traits.

2. Consider your Childhood
While scholarship and aid officers are not interested in reading about your childhood and are more interested in the last 2-4 years of your life, you might consider events of your childhood that inspired the interests you have today. Interests that began in childhood may be the most defining parts of your life, even if you recently lost interest. For instance, if you experienced extreme poverty, the death of a loved one, immigration, etc., you might want to incorporate this into your scholarship essay. Analyze the reasons for your interests and how they were shaped from your upbringing.

3. Consider your Role Models
Many applicants do not have role models and were never greatly influenced by just one or two people. However, for those of you who have role models and actually aspire to become like certain people, you may want to incorporate a discussion of that person and the traits you admired into your scholarship or financial aid application essay.

4. Read Sample Scholarship Essays and Admissions Essays
Before writing a poem, you would certainly read past poets. Before writing a book of philosophy, you would consider past philosophers. 2008 – 2009 SCHOLARSHIPS (CHICAGO CAMPUS)

New student scholarships are reserved for full-time students who have applied for admissions for fall 2008.
Current student scholarships are reserved for current full-time Adler School students at the Chicago campus who have completed at least one full term by the scholarship application deadline.
Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 in graduate and undergraduate coursework at the time of application.
Scholarships are disbursed toward tuition and fees over two terms. For example, a $5,000 scholarship would disburse $2,500 in the fall term and $2,500 in the spring term.
Students must maintain satisfactory academic progress in order to maintain eligibility for subsequent allocations of their awards.
New students who defer admission from the original term of acceptance will need to reapply for scholarship awards.
Need-based scholarships are reserved solely for U.S. citizens who have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Scholarship recipients may be required to attend a scholarship reception.

To apply for one or more Adler School scholarships, students must meet the above general scholarship criteria and submit a written statement supporting each scholarship they are applying for. Calvin College is pleased to offer merit-based scholarships as one way to recognize and encourage academic excellence. Each year, more than 70 percent of first-year students are awarded a renewable, merit-based scholarship. Students are selected for Calvin's merit-based scholarships based on a careful review of the following information:

GPA and academic transcripts
Scores from standardized tests (either ACT or SAT)
the student's written response to essay #2 on the admission application

These scholarships range from $1,000 to $10,000:

Students are automatically considered for the merit scholarships at the time of their admission to Calvin. To be considered, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.15 (non-weighted, on a 4.00 scale), an ACT composite score of 22 or SAT combined score (math and critical reading) of 1030. The quality and content of the student's written essay is also of great importance.

The Scholarship Committee begins its selection process in November and continues to make awards on a rolling (continuing) basis for the Presidential, Dean's, Faculty Honors, Honors and Knollcrest scholarships. The National Merit and Trustee Scholarships have different selection processes, as noted below. For maximum consideration for all scholarships, applicants should be admitted to Calvin by February 1. NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS

$10,000 per year, for four years
National Merit Scholarships are awarded to students who are selected as finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Calvin awards these scholarships to students who designate Calvin as their first choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

TRUSTEE SCHOLARSHIPS

$10,000 per year
Students must be admitted by February 1 to be considered for this scholarship.
Students considered will be in the top 3% of Calvin's admitted students. While GPA and test scores are important considerations, the selection committee will also give careful attention to the extent and quality of the student's involvements, leadership roles and honors received in school, church, and community. The selection process for the Trustee Scholarship includes a full review of the student's completed admission file, including GPA, academic transcripts, ACT or SAT scores, and careful consideration of the student's written response to essay #2 on the admission application.

Strict United States immigration laws require us to verify the ability of international students to pay all tuition and living expenses for the time they are studying in the US. Financial verification must be made prior to institutional issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019).

Please ensure that you read the following financial requirements thoroughly:

The Certification of Finances form must be completed in order to certify the availability of financial resources to pay your billed and personal/miscellaneous expenses while you are in the United States. We will not give an admission decision unless the completed form has been received.
The form must be sent to the Admissions Office with additional documentation attached, such as a bank statement and/or sponsor letter. This documentation must be written in or translated into English. It must also be signed by the appropriate individual (a bank employee or the sponsor) and, if indicated in the form's instructions, notarized by an official notary public. (A notary is a person with the power of law to witness the signing of written statements to make them official.) All dollar amounts must be quoted in U.S. dollars.
On the Certification form you must be able to demonstrate sufficient financial support to cover the total projected costs of your education for your entire time of enrollment-including both billed and personal costs for yourself and, if applicable, for any dependents. Financial aid is not available through the Financial Aid Office to assist students with the cost. Do not enter your expected job earnings after you arrive in the U.S. as part of your sponsorship.
International students who are offered admission will be sent an itemized list of the estimated costs for their first year. If you choose to enroll at Wheaton, you must send an advance deposit covering the billed costs for the first semester's tuition, room, board, insurance, and $100 Sevis fee to the Wheaton College Financial Aid Office by June 1, in order for a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) to be issued. The Financial Aid Office will send all accepted students an estimated budget listing the amount of this deposit. After the deposit has been received Wheaton will issue a Certificate of Eligibility, which must be presented to the U.S. consul to obtain the necessary visa.
The College sends all students an official bill in July itemizing actual, final costs for the first semester on campus. Any additional charges on the invoice not covered by the advance deposit (such as course fees) must be paid by the due date on the invoice. For subsequent semesters, payment for tuition, room, board, and insurance must be paid by December 15 for spring term and July 28 for fall term. It is the student's responsibility to be sure that all funds are sent in a timely manner so that bills are paid by the required due date; failure to do so will result in the cancellation of the student's enrollment at Wheaton.
Customs officials at your port of entry to the United States will expect you to have sufficient financial resources with you to cover personal expenses (including the cost of textbooks) for one semester.

Financial Assistance

The Wheaton College Undergraduate Admissions Office awards one international student scholarship each year. No separate application is required. Every international student applying for admission will automatically be considered for this scholarship; financial need will be a leading factor in the awarding of the scholarship.

Aside from this one scholarship, financial assistance for international students is not directly available through Wheaton College. Therefore, each student is responsible for funding their Wheaton education or finding an alternate source of funds. Students' admissibility will be linked to their ability to finance their education.

The Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation has been helping St. Louisans put charitable dollars to work addressing the issues most important to them in the communities they care most about since 1915. It is a nonprofit, charitable service provider supporting more than 325 charitable funds totaling $140 million in assets and distributing $12 million in grants annually. The Health Professions Scholarships

The Health Professions Scholarships are offered to individuals living in St. Anthony's service area, who will become tomorrow's front-line caregivers. Up to $150,000 is available for renewable scholarships, each from $2,000 to $10,000 per scholar, with 19 recipients in 2007. These scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing degrees in designated healthcare fields. This year, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy and respiratory therapy are the designated fields. Students must be within 48 months of graduating from Missouri colleges and universities or Southern Illinois University. Selection will be based on academic achievement, demonstrated financial need and personal commitment to a career in health care.

The Sons and Daughters of Employees Scholarships

The Sons and Daughters of Employees Scholarships are offered to children of
St. Anthony's employees who are academically qualified with demonstrated financial need. Up to $300,000 is available annually for renewable scholarships, each from $2,000 to $10,000 per scholar, with 41 recipients in 2007. Students selected will receive significant support to pursue an undergraduate degree in any field of study (not limited to health care) at any college or university in Missouri or Southern Illinois University.

The St. Anthony's Medical Center Foundation provides funding for both components of the St. Anthony's Scholars Program. The Foundation has engaged the Greater Saint Louis Community Foundation as its partner to implement the program.

2008-2009 TWU Scholarship Information

Texas Woman's University offers several scholarship opportunities for both new and continuing students. You may complete a scholarship application on-line. Students who are awarded scholarships will receive a personalized scholarship offer letter from the TWU Financial Aid Office. Students must return the letter by the deadline to avoid having the scholarship cancelled. Students not awarded scholarships will also be notified. Scholars

Out-of-State Waivers:

Out-of-state students who are awarded $1,000 or more in TWU academic scholarship funds may qualify to pay tuition at the Texas resident rate. Eligible students will be notified if they qualify for an out-of-state tuition waiver.

Eligibility :

To be considered for scholarships students must meet the following criteria:

Complete and submit a TWU Scholarship Application to the TWU Financial Aid Office by March 1, 2008.
Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for undergraduates and 3.2 or higher for graduate students.
Have all required admission applications and academic transcripts in the TWU Admission's Office or Graduate Admission's Office by March 1, 2008.
Enroll full-time (minimum of 12 hours for undergraduates; minimum 9 hours for graduate students and 6 hours for graduate assistants). EXCEPTIONS: You are graduating the semester of the award or your degree program requires less than full-time enrollment (Example: Clinicals, student teaching, thesis, dissertation).
Declare a major if you are an undergraduate student and have attempted at least 24 semester hours, or you are a graduate student and have attempted at least 12 semester hours.

No 2008-2009 Scholarship funds will be available from the programs listed on the TWU Scholarship Application if you submit your scholarship application or complete your admissions file, if applicable, after March 1, 2008. TWU General Academic Scholarships

Awards are $500 per year. This scholarship is available to new students, continuing students, undergraduates and graduates. Students must reapply for this scholarship each year. This scholarship is awarded strictly on the basis of cumulative grade point average.

Departmental Scholarships

Each department at TWU has scholarship funds available to award. Students should contact the chairperson of the department in which they will be majoring for more information.

Mary Bryan and Tom C. Reitch Scholarship

Awards are $1,200 per year. This scholarship is available to entering students and TWU students who have completed at least 24 credit hours. Applicants must complete the Reitch supplemental questions on the TWU Scholarship Application. Awards are based upon academic standing and financial need.

Entering Freshmen:

New Freshman Student Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. Entering freshmen and transfer students with less than 13 college credits may apply for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on the combination of high school grade point average, class rank, and SAT/ACT scores.

TWU Honors Scholarship

Awards are $4,500 per year. Recipients chosen from the scholarship applicant pool.

TWU Presidential Scholarship

This scholarship is only available to entering freshmen who were Valedictorians or Salutatorians at an accredited high school. This scholarship pays full tuition and fees excluding room, board and books.

Chancellor's Endowed Scholarship

Awards are tuition, fees and stipend per year. Recipients chosen from scholarship applicant pool.

Entering Transfer Students:

New Transfer Student Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. Students transferring to TWU from accredited junior colleges or four-year institutions with more than 12 credit hours may apply for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on a combination of cumulative grade point average and number of hours transferred to TWU.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. Applicants must be active Phi Theta Kappa members in good standing and must continue to serve in Phi Theta Kappa at Texas Woman's University.

TWU Dream Come True Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. Students transferring from a Rising Star program in the Dallas County Community College District may be eligible. This scholarship requires a minimum 3.0 GPA and 60 credit hours. Applicants must contact their DCCCD campus Rising Star adviser for instructions and application materials.

Entering Graduate Students:

New Graduate Student Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. This award is automatically renewable for up to two years for Masters students and up to three years for Doctoral students as long as the recipient maintains a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average. Students who will be starting their graduate work at TWU for the first time are eligible to apply for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of cumulative grade point average and academic discipline.

McNair Scholars Scholarship

Several awards of $1,800 per year will be made to juniors and above. Several awards of $1,800 per year will be made to new graduate students who were undergraduate McNair Scholars. These awards are renewable as described in the New Graduate Student Scholarships section. Applicants must provide a letter of verification from their McNair advisor.

Entering International Students:

New International Student Scholarship

Awards are $1,800 per year. This award is automatically renewable as long as the minimum grade point average is maintained or until degree is received.

Loans

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS has limited funds available for short-term emergency loans to current UO international students. A typical loan is approximately $200 and must be repaid within 90 days. For further information, please contact an International Student Adviser in INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, 330 Oregon Hall. Loans may be made at any time during a student's academic program.

International Student Work-Study Program

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS grants more than 50 work-study awards (ranging from $500-$2,500) each year to eligible international students with financial need. Students who receive these awards will be able to seek and compete for on-campus work-study jobs during the academic year. Students are not guaranteed on-campus jobs, but opportunities for on-campus employment will increase.

Eligibility:

Applicants for work-study may be prospective or current UO international students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must demonstrate financial need. International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) Tuition Scholarships

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS grants 30-40 competitive, partial tuition-waiver scholarships to international students each year. The ICSP scholarship has a required cultural service component which requires students to give presentations about their home country to classes at the University of Oregon, to local schools, or to community groups. Funds are made available by the University of Oregon and can be applied toward reducing tuition only. ICSP awards are based on financial need, academic merit, and the ability to make presentations to diverse groups of people. Awards are renewable.

Eligibility:

Applicants may be prospective or current UO students. Current students must be enrolled in a regular, full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1.) Helen and Barney Wood Nepalese Student Scholarship:
This scholarship was established by Dr. Wood, a former UO professor of Education. One scholarship of approximately $2,000 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. It is to be used for maintenance for a student who receives a tuition scholarship from another source, such as a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF), the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) or other UO tuition scholarship programs. The award is for a prospective or current UO student from Nepal. This scholarship is renewable each year until graduation, provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA and can demonstrate financial need each year.
Jim and Jean Tattersall International Student Scholarship:
Honoring Jim and Jean Tattersall, one scholarship of approximately $1,500 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective international students may apply.
Alumni Association (UOAA) Japan Chapter Scholarship:
Each year, University of Oregon alumni chapters award scholarships to UO students from their local areas. Awards are based on extra curricular activities, academic merit, and the applicant's essay. The UOAA Japan Chapter is offering a scholarship of approximately $1000 to a Japanese student. Applicants must have junior or senior standing in their degree programs by Fall 2008 to be eligible. Johan & Emel Mehlum Family Scholarship: Honoring Johan and Emel Mehlum,

One scholarship of approximately $6,000 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. This scholarship is only available for an entering freshman from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.

Several scholarships of approximately $6,000 will be awarded during the 2008-2009 academic year. Applicants must be continuing undergraduate students who can demonstrate leadership qualities through campus and community involvement, hold a minimum 3.25 GPA, and can demonstrate financial need. To apply, students with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency must file and submit a FAFSA application and complete a scholarship application. Pan American Fellowship

The Pan American Fellowship Fund was established by the Oregon Federation of WomenÕs Clubs (OFWC) in 1946 to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Latin America pursue graduate work at an Oregon college or university, and to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Oregon pursue graduate work in Latin America. The fellowship award pays the recipient $325 per month for ten months (September through June.) An extension may be requested for summer, additional term, and/or another school year. Procedure

Send your completed Part-time MBA application form to our Admissions Office
Submit your scholarship essay, containing at the most 1500 words, digitally (preferably in a PDF format) to scholarships@nyenrode.nl. A candidate can apply for a maximum number of two scholarships, and can win only one.
Your scholarship essay will only be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee once you have submitted a complete application to the Part-time MBA program.
The Scholarship Committee will select three essays per scholarship for the final round. The authors of these selected essays will be notified in March 2008, and will be invited to present their essays to the Scholarship Jury.
The presentations will take place at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in March or if necessary via telephone or video conferencing. Per scholarship, only one winner will be selected.

Important information

Through the contributions of Nyenrode Business Universiteit, our alumni, and companies in the form of scholarships, we are pleased to announce that we are able to offer a significant number of scholarships for the 2008/2009 IMBA program.

Nyenrode Scholarships are awarded on the basis of your application as well as an additional essay competition. In addition to the scholarship, each winner will also be assigned an experienced business manager as a personal coach during the course of the program.

A Nyenrode committee will screen all written scholarship applications and will select no more than three candidates to proceed to the final round. These selected candidates will be invited to present their essays to the Scholarship Jury in July. The presentation will take 30 minutes including questions from the jury. Should the candidate live abroad, the presentation can be conducted by telephone or video conferencing. The jury will make a decision regarding allocation of the scholarship to one of the three candidates after the presentations. The committee and the jury reserve the right not to award the scholarship. The outcome of the scholarship competition will be announced in August 2008.

IMBA Scholarships Procedure

In order to start the scholarship application process, please fill in the scholarship registration form. The Scholarship Officer will confirm your registration by e-mail.
You may apply for a maximum number of three scholarships, but can be awarded only one. Please submit your scholarship essay(s) to scholarships@nyenrode.nl . The Scholarship Officer will confirm receipt of your scholarship application(s).
Your scholarship essay(s) will only be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee after you have been admitted into the International MBA program.
The deadline for submitting scholarship essays is May 31st, 2008. Please be reminded that by this date you must also have submitted your complete application package for the IMBA Program. Candidates who fail to apply for the IMBA program before this deadline will not be considered for the scholarship competition.

Info Scholarship - The Emergency Educational Grant Program

Emergency Educational Grants

The Emergency Educational Grant program provides financial assistance to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks, who wish to obtain or further their college education.

Grant amounts are based on the information submitted in the application and can range up to $4,000. The grant is for one year only; however, the student may submit up to three annual renewal applications for succeeding years as long as he or she meets all other eligibility requirements. The applicant cannot accept more than one ENF scholarship/grant in any one academic year.

New applications should be filed between July 1 and December 31. Renewal applications must be filed between July 1 and October 31. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. The grant is for educational assistance only and not intended to cover the entire cost of a college education. Assistance cannot be extended beyond four years.

Before applying, please be sure that the applicant meets the following eligibility guidelines.

The Elk parent or stepparent must have been a member in good standing for at least one year at the time of his or her death.

The Elk parent or stepparent must have been a member in good standing for at least one year before he or she became totally disabled and must continue to be an Elk in good standing when application for assistance is made.
All circumstances surrounding the death or disability of the Elk parent or stepparent are subject to the review of the Elks National Foundation. The outcome of the review may effect grant approval.
The applicant must demonstrate financial need to qualify for a grant under this program.
The applicant must be unmarried, under the age of 23 as of Dec. 31 in the year of application, and attending a U.S. college or university as a full-time (12 semester hours) undergraduate student.

All applications -- new and renewal -- must be submitted to, and processed by, the Lodge where the Elk parent or stepparent is or was a member. Be sure to use the checklist on the application to ensure that all necessary paperwork has been included.

The Lodge must investigate the application, and submit a letter of endorsement with the application. After the vote of the Lodge, the Lodge Secretary must complete the portion of the application as noted. These steps must be followed on all new AND renewal applications.

As soon as possible after the student has turned the application in to the Lodge, the Scholarship Committee should conduct its investigation, and the Lodge should follow up with a vote, so that the application can be submitted to the ENF office.

The ENF office does not mail applications for this program in bulk quantities. With each new printing, we may make several changes to the application, so we want to be sure that the Lodges have the most up-to-date application. The Lodge or the student may request an Emergency Educational Grant application from the ENF Chicago office by contacting 773/755-4732 or scholarship@elks.org.

Applications for the Elks National Foundation's 2008 Most Valuable Student contest will be available beginning September 1, 2007 at your local Elks Lodge, online or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Foundation. Applications for the 2008 contest have to be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by January 11, 2008.

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2008 competition.

Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply.
Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks.
College students are not eligible to apply.
Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; resident alien status does not qualify.
Male and female students compete separately.

Scholarships

A substantial number of scholarships is allotted each year by the Institute to Master and Ph.D. students on the basis of academic merit and financial need. There are three kinds of scholarships: full scholarships, partial scholarships and tuition scholarships. Their duration is of one year with only one possible renewal.

Full scholarships: in principle amount to 18 000 CHF paid in ten instalments. Recipients are exempt from the Institute's tuition fees but not from University of Geneva fees. Certain full grants are awarded under special conditions (duration and/or geographical origin).

Partial scholarships: may amount up to 18 000 CHF; recipients are not exempt from tuition fees.

Living expenses

The Studentship Awards

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures offers a variety of awards to financially support their postgraduate students in order to enable them to pursue and complete their doctoral research or masters programme. All studentships are competitive and are awarded on academic merit.

The maintenance awards are in line with the AHRC guidelines, which for 2007-08 are: £8800 (MA) and £12600 (PhD). Tuition fees covered are at the university UK/EU level, which for 2008-09 are: £3750 (MA) and £3300 (MA by Research, MPhil and PhD). International overseas students will have to top-up the difference between UK/EU and O/S rates.

Full fee and maintenance awards are available at both masters (1 year) and doctoral research level (3 years). Fee-waivers cover the UK/EU rate for period of study/research. Bursaries may be one-off or annual depending upon length of study/research and vary in amounts from £500 - £1500.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for an award, you must have been offered and have accepted a place to undertake a programme of study/research on one of the degrees within the School of Modern Languages and Cultures.

Application for studentship at Doctoral level

You will normally be expected to apply to the AHRC Doctoral Competition through the University of Nottingham. Suitably qualified OS students would be encouraged to apply to the ORS in parallel to the Studentship. You will either have, or will be studying for a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate area: applicants who also apply to the AHRC or ORS will be given first consideration for a School Studentship.

Application for studentship at Masters level inc. Postgraduate Language Diplomas

You will normally be expected to apply to the AHRC for one of the Master’s Preparation awards through the University of Nottingham and will either have, or be expecting to achieve a good first degree (upper second or higher) in an appropriate area: applicants who also apply to the AHRC will be given first consideration for a School Studentship. There is also funding available from CRCEES for the PG Language Diplomas in Serbian/Croatian and Slovene (www.gla.ac.uk/crcees) but you need to have secured a place at Nottingham first.

2008 competition

The AHRC funds UK and EU students for Masters and Doctoral study. Those applying for AHRC funding do so through a University. The timetable on this page shows the dates by which your application, including references, need to be with the Department. Please note, applying is a lengthy process - common areas of delay are obtaining the references and the 'notification of degree results' - so you must allow plenty of time for yourself and your referees.

Please note that this year the AHRC is limiting the number of applications from Universities. This makes an already competitive process even more competitive. Normally, School Policy is to support applications from candidates who have or are expected to get a good first degree (upper second or higher) for the Master's scheme and an MA for the Doctoral Scheme. There is no guarantee that an application will be supported by the University but we would hope to support as many applications as possible.

Program Description

ArtsLink Projects provides support to US artists, curators, presenters, and arts organizations undertaking projects in Central Europe, Russia and Eurasia. Applicants must be working with an artist or organization in that region and projects should be designed to benefit participants and audiences in both the US and the host country.

In 2008, applications will be accepted from individual artists, presenters, and non-profit arts organizations working in dance, music, theater and literature. ArtsLink has a cycle of alternate year deadlines according to discipline. In 2009, applications will be accepted from individual artists, curators, and non-profit arts organizations working in visual and media arts. Support is provided to:

create new work that draws inspiration from interaction with artists and the community in the country visited;
establish mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and expertise between artists, arts organizations, and the local community;
pursue artistic cooperation that will enrich creative or professional development, or has potential to expand the community's access to the art of other cultures.

Examples of eligible ArtsLink Projects:

A US choreographer collaborating with an Estonian composer on new work for an Estonian dance company
The collaboration between a US translator and Hungarian writer on the translation and compilation of a body of poetry
A US playwright conducting a series of workshops with members of the Slovenian theater community
A US festival director visiting several Central European theater festivals to see work and present videos of US artists

Review Criteria
The selection process is extremely competitive. Applicants should anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work and should demonstrate compelling reasons for wanting to work in the selected country. All ArtsLink applications will be evaluated by peer review panels based on the following review criteria:

Artistic excellence and merit of the applicant's work;
Quality and feasibility of project plan;
Potential for interactive dialogue and benefit of proposed project to both US applicant and overseas participants;
Project's potential to bring the benefit of the cross-cultural exchange to other artists or audiences in both the US and the international participant's country.

Eligibility
Students, scholars, administrators, critics, and amateur groups are not eligible to apply. In addition, projects focusing solely on research, or the production of an audio recording are not elegible. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. 2007 ArtsLink Projects awardees are not eligible. 2008 ArtsLink Projects awardees will not be eligible to apply again until 2010. In 2008, applications in visual and media arts are not eligible. Past ArtsLink Projects awardees who have not submitted a final report are not eligible.

Important Information
Projects involving performances, touring or participation in performing arts festivals can be supported by ArtsLink only if this activity is a component of a more comprehensive proposed project. Panelists will evaluate the quality of the project by assessing the potential for interactive dialogue.

The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), was established on 15 December 1997 to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries that now include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia , Indonesia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar , the Philippines , Singapore , Thailand and Viet Nam . It has been mandated to promote greater awareness of ASEAN and greater interaction among its peoples and their increased participation in ASEAN activities as well as to undertake development cooperation activities that enhance mutual assistance, address equitable economic development and reduce poverty. This scholarship program is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies and funded through the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund.

The Asian Institute of Technology, on the other hand, is an international post graduate institute founded in 1959, and is Asia's pioneer institution established to help meet the region's growing needs for advanced learning in engineering, science, technology and management, research and capacity building. AIT's mission is to develop highly qualified and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy. AIT is based in Thailand and has affiliated centers in other parts of the world.

Ten (10) full scholarships are available for ASEAN nationals who wish to pursue masters degree in AIT. The scholarship award will cover tuition and other academic fees, and living allowances for a 2-year programme.

Four (4) scholarship slots will be awarded under the project “Capacity building for Gender, Poverty and Mobility Analysis of Road Transportation Development in GMS Region”. The remaining six (6) scholarships will be allocated for the various fields of study identified by ASEAN Foundation as indicated below.--

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, applicants must:

Be a bonafide ASEAN national;
Hold a bachelors degree (normally from a four-year program) or its equivalent in an appropriate field;
Have above average undergraduate grades (minimum CGPA of 2.75); and,
Satisfy other requirements as specified by the school you apply to.
AIT is an international institute with English as the sole language of instruction. Admission to AIT requires proof of English language proficiency which may be satisfied in any of the following: Submission of an official test score from any of the following standardized English exams: TOEFL, IELTS, CU-TEP ( Thailand ), ARC (Lao PDR).
Agree to return and/or serve for at least 2 years in any ASEAN countries after completion of their studies.

Le Gouvernement Français accordera, sur financement du ministère français des Affaires Etrangères et Européennes, au titre de l’année universitaire 2008/2009, des bourses d’études à des étudiants désireux de poursuivre tout ou partie de leurs études supérieures en France dans des établissements d’enseignement supérieur habilités à délivrer des diplômes nationaux.

Les formations visées couvrent uniquement :

l’année d’études universitaires correspondant à la deuxième année de Master (Master), ou conduisant à un diplôme national de niveau équivalent, selon les diplômes délivrés par l’établissement français d’accueil ;

les études doctorales.

Les conditions requises pour faire acte de candidature sont les suivantes :

être citoyen biélorusse, ou pour ceux qui sont sans citoyenneté être résident légal en Biélorussie ;

être titulaire d’un diplôme de l’enseignement supérieur reconnu par l’État biélorusse permettant de s’inscrire dans un des cursus visés en France ;

avoir, sauf exception (par exemple, formation assurée en anglais par l’établissement d’accueil ou accord du laboratoire français d’accueil pour encadrer les recherches dans une autre langue que le français), une maîtrise suffisante de la langue française ;

être inscrit ou allant s’inscrire à la prochaine rentrée universitaire dans un des niveaux de formation concernés.

Pour les études visant à l’obtention d’un diplôme national français de niveau Master les bourses seront allouées pour l’intégralité de l’année universitaire et ne pourront faire l’objet d’aucune prolongation une fois l’accord donné pour une durée déterminée pendant l’année universitaire concernée. La plupart de ces formations débutant en octobre, les bourses seront attribuées à compter du premier jour de ce mois, sauf exception, et ne pourront aller au-delà de fin juin 2009.

Concernant les études doctorales, seront privilégiées les thèses en co-direction ou en cotutelle. Les bourses seront allouées à raison d’un semestre universitaire par année académique, la reconduction de la bourse pendant la durée des études étant conditionnée à une demande de renouvellement et à la présentation de l’avancement de ses travaux par le bénéficiaire. Chaque candidat doit préciser dans son dossier la période concernée (dates de début et de fin du séjour en France). Les bourses seront attribuées à compter du premier jour du séjour indiqué par le candidat.

Les bourses allouées par le Gouvernement Français correspondent à une allocation d’entretien mensuelle nette d’environ 767 €, versée directement au boursier, destinée à couvrir ses frais d’hébergement et de dépenses courantes sur place. Chaque boursier bénéficie d’une couverture sociale ainsi que d’avantages tarifaires liés à son statut. Le voyage aller-retour (pays à pays) n’est pas pris en charge mais le transfert Paris-province est couvert.

N’ayant pas vocation à couvrir tout ou partie des frais d’études, ces bourses ne peuvent être attribuées qu’à des candidats inscrits dans des établissements français d’enseignement supérieur n’exigeant pas de frais de formation pour les cursus visés.

Pour les doctorants bénéficiant actuellement d’une bourse du Gouvernement français, le renouvellement au titre de l’année universitaire 2008/2009 n’a pas un caractère automatique. Il leur est donc demandé de présenter une demande de renouvellement accompagnée des pièces requises pour l’examen de leur dossier.

The Great Scholarship Quest

Finding and winning scholarships is hard work. Here's where to start and how to improve your odds.

The fact is that 98% of college assistance is in the form of financial aid from federal and state governments and need- and merit-based aid from the schools themselves, and only about 2% is in private scholarships from organizations other than the schools.

There's money out there, to be sure, and someone has to win it. But finding and winning scholarships is an extra-credit project -- with the emphasis on project. Filling out applications, getting recommendations, writing essays and otherwise competing for scholarship money is time-consuming work for the applicant. And it's not always as rewarding as you might hope.

Most scholarships fall into one of three categories:

1. The incredibly narrow. Know anyone who would qualify for a scholarship for left-handed Lithuanians studying horticulture? Okay, that's a slight exaggeration, but consider a real award:

From the American Pomological Society, $300 for the best research or historical paper on fruit breeding.

Most of the time, the glass slipper just doesn't fit.

2. The supercompetitive. Some scholarship competitions could make you want to head for the lottery window, instead. Check this out:

As many as 20,000 high school seniors have applied for the ESPN Scholastic Sports America Scholarship, worth $2,500. Only six young men and six young women win.

Many of the best-known and most prestigious national-level scholarships fall into this category. There's nothing wrong with competing for them -- the competition itself can be a great experience for young people. Just be aware that lots of super-bright, super-talented kids don't win. (Although people may scoff at Miss America, Miss Teenage America and Junior Miss pageants as scholarship competitions, they are just as competitive as many of the more "serious" competitions -- and they award a lot more money.)

3. The drop in the bucket. A huge number of scholarships you'll find listed in aid directories, available at your public library (see Where to Look) are for $500 or less. Yes, money is money. And the award itself adds an extra spark to the college application. But your kid might have an easier time earning $500 than meeting the entry requirements for a half-dozen scholarship competitions that might yield a $500 prize.

The scholarship mirage

A financial award might not help you as much as you might think with the college bills. When giving out financial aid, some colleges subtract the value of an outside scholarship from need-based grants they would have awarded, freeing up the funds for other students. Their view: You now have additional resources to cover the bills, so you need that much less help from the school. The result: Your out-of-pocket contribution to college costs remains as great as before the scholarship.

However, many of the more-prestigious private colleges have softened their policy on outside scholarships, so that such awards replace student loans and work-study first. Then, any remaining scholarship money remaining replaces need-based grants.

What if the school is one of an increasing number of schools that "gap," or leave families with a certain amount of unmet need? Most colleges that gap will allow an outside scholarship to cover that unmet need. Let's say, for instance, that you have $10,000 of need at a $20,000 college that meets just 90% of your need with a $9,000 aid package. Such a school would allow the first $1,000 of any outside scholarship to go toward meeting the gap, before using any additional scholarship money to replace grants, work-study or loans in your aid package.

Before your son or daughter scouts out and applies for scholarships, ask a financial-aid officer at each college you're considering how the school treats outside awards.

If the school uses scholarships only to replace its own aid, it probably doesn't make much sense to spend a lot of effort applying for scholarships.

If the college lets some or all of the scholarship go to replace loans rather than grants (or, even better, to reduce your own contribution), then finding outside money is worth the effort.

Who should seek scholarships?

Some students (and parents) don't mind expending the time and effort to seek scholarships even if the gain might be small.

Here's who stands to benefit the most:

Families who don't expect to qualify for any financial aid or whose aid packages will consist mostly of loans.

Families who do expect aid but are applying to schools that gap, leaving students with unmet financial need.

Families who expect aid but are applying to colleges that have favorable policies toward scholarships.

Students who enjoy the thrill of competing and the prestige of winning, even if the award doesn't reduce college costs.

Where to look

To find local awards that are probably less of a long shot than national competitions, do some detective work. Here's a list of leads to get you started.

Your high school guidance counselor. Most guidance counselors maintain a bulletin board or keep a folder of local and national scholarship opportunities.

College financial-aid officers. Drop in at the financial-aid office as you're touring college campuses, or pick up the phone and call if you're unable to make the trip. Ask whether the schools offer merit-based scholarships, and what grades, SAT scores or other criteria would make your child eligible.

Find out whether you must apply and submit recommendations for such awards or whether the school awards them automatically based on information you've supplied on your child's application for admission. Also ask about departmental scholarships in your child's intended major.

Scholarship directories. Hit the library and page through a couple of scholarship guides. One good choice is the Chronicle Financial Aid Guide (check the reference section of your library or contact Chronicle Guidance Publications, 800-622-7284; $24.98).

Search services versus free databases. Computerized services advertised in newspapers or online are sometimes poor values -- and sometimes outright rip-offs. The $40 to $200 or more you spend may turn up awards with narrow eligibility or ones your child has only a remote chance of winning. Sometimes the search companies even claim that their services are "guaranteed" and offer a refund or a $200 savings bond to students who don't receive any scholarship money. But the Council of Better Business Bureaus has warned that such refunds are "difficult, if not impossible, to obtain," requiring, for instance, that you prove you applied for every scholarship on the list and were turned down. Besides, you can serach just as well or better yourself with the following resources.

Fund finder. You can probably tap into one of the best searches around right in your high school guidance counselor's office -- at no charge. One thousand high schools subscribe to the College Board's ExPAN, a database of thousands of private grants and scholarships.

The College Board's Web site. If your high school doesn't have Fund Finder, you can search the database at the College Board's Web site.

Other free searches. Other free search programs can be accessed on the Web, including fastWeb and Mach25.

Start your search early. Junior year isn't too early to begin hitting the guidebooks. Some competition deadlines fall early in the senior year, which doesn't leave much time to send away for applications, prepare essays or science projects and get recommendations from teachers.

Thinking ahead -- say, by sophomore year -- also gives your child time to join organizations that offer scholarships, like a 4-H Club or scouting group.

Carefully read instructions and eligibility criteria. Encourage your child to read every word to avoid wasting time on applications that are trashed on receipt by the sponsor or disqualified for a small error, such as exceeding a word count for an essay or omitting a required transcript or recommendation.

Ask for samples of winning entries. Most scholarship sponsors will tell you in broad terms what criteria are used to select winners, but reading a winning essay, article, speech, history paper or science-project proposal can give you real insight into what judges are looking for. Often, they're available for the asking. After high school

For those who are inclined, scholarship-seeking isn't just for high schoolers. There are just as many awards for college sophomores, juniors and seniors, even though we've excluded them here. The same search tactics -- and caveats -- apply:

Spend some library time with the guidebooks.
Try a computerized search if it's free or low-cost.
Touch base with clubs and organizations, faculty and your financial-aid officer on campus.
Think creatively about outside groups that might have a philanthropic interest in a kid like yours.
And don't let the scholarship hunt for relatively few dollars eclipse the more-important task of applying intelligently for financial aid.

Bilateral Exchange of Academics

Under this bilateral agreement between the DAAD and the Directorate of Higher Education (DIKTI) academics and researchers from Indonesia and Germany who hold a doctorate and are working at a univessity can be invited to come to Germany or Indonesia to carry out a joint research project/research stay. The partner organisation proposes selected candidates to the DAAD and sends an appropriate ranking.
Applications by Indonesian academics and researchers are forwarded to the DAAD by the DIKTI. Applications by German academics and researchers are submitted direct to the DAAD.
The stay should last at least two weeks but no longer than three months.
Lecture tours and conference visits cannot be funded.

Research Grants for Doctoral Candidates and Young Academics and Scientists

Application deadline: 5 October each year
Applications for research grants may be submitted by excellently qualified young lecturers from state and private universities respectively IKIPs as well as academics and scientists from state research institutions who have passed their second (graduate) degree (Master’s) with a grade of 3.0 or better and who can prove that they have gained at least two years of career experience. In exceptional cases, young university graduates from the private sector may also apply
The DAAD will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance.
Applicants from Indonesia for research grants are generally expected to be able to prove that they have a basic knowledge of German at the time of application
The award of research grants to run for more than six months is subject to an age limit of 32 for applicants from Indonesia. In the case of shorter terms or where a doctorate is to be gained under the DAAD Sandwich Model, exceptions up to an age limit of 36 are possible.

Application materials for applying for a Belle Zeller scholarship for academic year 2008-2009 are available for download.

Note that there is one form for undergraduates, one for Law School students and one for students at the Graduate Center. Please be sure that you download and submit the correct application.
