INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS administers a variety of loans, scholarships, grants and work-study awards for undergraduate and graduate students, prospective and continuing students and scholars.

Loans

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS has limited funds available for short-term emergency loans to current UO international students. A typical loan is approximately $200 and must be repaid within 90 days. For further information, please contact an International Student Adviser in INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, 330 Oregon Hall. Loans may be made at any time during a student's academic program.

International Student Work-Study Program

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS grants more than 50 work-study awards (ranging from $500-$2,500) each year to eligible international students with financial need. Students who receive these awards will be able to seek and compete for on-campus work-study jobs during the academic year. Students are not guaranteed on-campus jobs, but opportunities for on-campus employment will increase.

Eligibility:

Applicants for work-study may be prospective or current UO international students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and must demonstrate financial need. Current UO Work-Study recipients must reapply to receive funding during the 2008-2009 academic year. Click here to apply for the International Student Work-Study Program. The application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year is April 15, 2008.

International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) Tuition Scholarships

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS grants 30-40 competitive, partial tuition-waiver scholarships to international students each year. The ICSP scholarship has a required cultural service component which requires students to give presentations about their home country to classes at the University of Oregon, to local schools, or to community groups. Funds are made available by the University of Oregon and can be applied toward reducing tuition only. ICSP awards are based on financial need, academic merit, and the ability to make presentations to diverse groups of people. Awards are renewable.

Eligibility:

Applicants may be prospective or current UO students. Current students must be enrolled in a regular, full-time course of study at the UO with a nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1.) Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students. For more information, go to the ICSP website or contact icsp@uoregon.edu. The application deadline for 2008-2009 is February 15, 2008.

Scholarships for International Students

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS grants 15-20 competitive scholarships each year to international students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

Eligibility:

Applicants may be prospective or current international students and scholars. Prospective students must first apply for admission to the University of Oregon before February 15, 2008. (To apply online, go to the international admissions website at http:// admissions.uoregon.edu/international/index.html). Current UO students must have a valid nonimmigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) and be enrolled in a regular, full-time course of study with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year is February 15, 2008.

ICSP Nascence Scholarship


This supplemental scholarship is awarded to a student from China or Hong Kong who is also a recipient of the International Cultural Service Program scholarship. This scholarship was created in honor of Fredric Leung, former ICSP recipient and UO alumni.

Here is a list of scholarship opportunities for current and prospective international students at the University of Oregon:

  1. Kenneth S. Ghent Scholarship:
    Honoring Dr. Kenneth S. Ghent, former director of IA, several scholarships of approximately $3,500 each may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. Awards are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be in the last year of their degree programs in 2008-2009 to be eligible. Not available to prospective students.
  2. Pressman Family Scholarship:
    Honoring the Pressman family, one scholarship of approximately $750 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective students may apply.
  3. Pin Julaphongs Thai Student Scholarship
    In memory of former UO student Pin Julaphong, one scholarship of approximately $1,000 may be awarded to a Thai student for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective Thai students may apply.
  4. Sushil Jajodia Indian Student Scholarship:
    Established by UO alumnus Sushil Jajodia, '77, scholarship awards of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded to Indian students for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective Indian students may apply.
  5. John Haines African Student Scholarship:
    Established by Dr. John Haines, a Eugene ophthalmologist with a keen interest in international students. Two scholarships of approximately $2,000 each may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective African students may apply.
  6. Helen and Barney Wood Nepalese Student Scholarship:
    This scholarship was established by Dr. Wood, a former UO professor of Education. One scholarship of approximately $2,000 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. It is to be used for maintenance for a student who receives a tuition scholarship from another source, such as a Graduate Teaching Fellowship (GTF), the International Cultural Service Program (ICSP) or other UO tuition scholarship programs. The award is for a prospective or current UO student from Nepal. This scholarship is renewable each year until graduation, provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA and can demonstrate financial need each year.
  7. Jim and Jean Tattersall International Student Scholarship:
    Honoring Jim and Jean Tattersall, one scholarship of approximately $1,500 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. Continuing and prospective international students may apply.
  8. Alumni Association (UOAA) Japan Chapter Scholarship:
    Each year, University of Oregon alumni chapters award scholarships to UO students from their local areas. Awards are based on extra curricular activities, academic merit, and the applicant's essay. The UOAA Japan Chapter is offering a scholarship of approximately $1000 to a Japanese student. Applicants must have junior or senior standing in their degree programs by Fall 2008 to be eligible. Not available to prospective students.
  9. Johan & Emel Mehlum Family Scholarship: Honoring Johan and Emel Mehlum,

One scholarship of approximately $6,000 may be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year. This scholarship is only available for an entering freshman from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey.

UO COLLEGES, SCHOOLS & DEPARTMENTS

A number of colleges, schools and departments at the University of Oregon offer various kinds of undergraduate and graduate awards, including scholarships, assistantships, and graduate teaching fellowships (GTFs.) Students should contact the department for their major about the availability of financial support. A list of departmental scholarships is available through the Office of Student Financial Aid

International Dean's Excellence Award (IDEA) for New International Students

Several merit-based, partial-tuition scholarships, valued at $6,000 each and renewable based on GPA, are awarded by the Admissions Office to international applicants with meritorious records of past academic performance. IDEA award recipients are selected by the Admissions Office on the basis of official academic records submitted with the UO admissions application. A separate application is not required for this scholarship award. In order to be considered for this scholarship, students must apply for admission to the UO based on priority application deadlines for international students. General UO Scholarships

International students are eligible to apply for general university scholarships which are not attached to particular departments or schools. General university scholarships, which range from $1,000 to $2,700, are extremely competitive and are awarded on the basis of academic performance, extracurricular involvement, and writing ability. To apply, students must submit the "University of Oregon Scholarship Application" by January 15, 2008; continuing and transfer students should submit the application by February 1, 2008. UO Ella Travis Edmunson and Mercy Travis Davis Scholarship

Several scholarships of approximately $6,000 will be awarded during the 2008-2009 academic year. Applicants must be continuing undergraduate students who can demonstrate leadership qualities through campus and community involvement, hold a minimum 3.25 GPA, and can demonstrate financial need. To apply, students with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency must file and submit a FAFSA application and complete a scholarship application. International students in nonimmigrant visa status (F-1 or J-1) must submit an Financial Aid Worksheet for International Students and a scholarship application. Scholarship applications will be available winter term 2008 in the Office of Academic Advising, 364 Oregon Hall. The scholarship application deadline is yet to be determined, but is traditionally during the first week of Spring Term 2008.

ROBERT D. CLARK HONORS COLLEGE

Shepard Family Scholarship

This scholarship is available to 1) international students living outside the U.S. who have been accepted into the Robert D.Clark Honors College; and 2) international students who have completed at least one year at the Robert D. Clark Honors College. Preference will be given to incoming freshman. The number and amount of awards will vary depending on the number of qualified students and available resources. Students must complete the application materials for admission to Robert D. Clark Honors College. No additional scholarship application is required. Click here to apply for admission to Robert D. Graduate Teaching Fellowships

International graduate students are eligible to apply for graduate teaching fellowships (GTFs) or research assistantships in their departments. These awards are granted only to graduate students with sufficient English-language ability to teach or conduct research in their academic specialty. Application forms and instructions are available through the academic departments. GTFs provide a tuition waiver and stipend (salary) for the academic year. These awards are subject to United States income taxes. Click here for information on current GTF positions.

OREGON FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS

Pan American Fellowship

The Pan American Fellowship Fund was established by the Oregon Federation of WomenÕs Clubs (OFWC) in 1946 to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Latin America pursue graduate work at an Oregon college or university, and to assist women graduates of accredited colleges in Oregon pursue graduate work in Latin America. The fellowship award pays the recipient $325 per month for ten months (September through June.) An extension may be requested for summer, additional term, and/or another school year. To apply, applicants should meet with an international student adviser in International Affairs, 330 Oregon Hall, and request a letter of recommendation. Leo S. Rowe Pan American Fund

The Rowe Fund is an Educational Loan Program of the Organization of the American States. They grant interest-free loans to competent persons from Latin American and Caribbean countries to help them finance their higher education studies in accredited universities in the U.S. There is a maximum of $7,500 per academic period. Loans are available for graduate, postgraduate, and the last two years of undergraduate studies. Loans are also available to professionals who are currently pursuing or wish to pursue advanced research studies or technical activities in accredited institutions within the U.S. For more information, visit their website at www.oas.org/rowe.

The World Bank Group Family Network

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund is an outreach program of the World Bank Family Network. The fund provides financial assistance to women from developing countries during their studies in the United States or Canada. The MMMF annually awards about six to ten grants of approximately $11,000 each. The application must be filled out online at www.wbfn.org (click on OUTREACH.)
